Could the New York Giants go from Worst to First in 2019?

For the last two seasons, the New York Giants have finished in the cellar in the NFC East. They were 5-11 in 2018 and they were 3-13 in 2017. New York showed improvement this past season. They lost eight one possession games this past season. That is a sign of a team going through growing pains and learning how to win.

Pat Shurmur was in his first season as head coach, but he will be under immense pressure in year two of his coaching tenure. This team can not take any steps backwards next season. The Giants will have high expectations next season to get back to the postseason. They have missed the playoffs the last six-out-of-seven seasons. Is it possible for the New York Giants to go from worst in the NFC East division to first in the NFC East division next season?

One of the reasons why they can is because it is very rare in the NFC East for teams to win back-to-back division titles. The last time a team won back-to-back division titles was when the Philadelphia Eagles won four straight division titles from 2001-2004.

New York will have a reasonable schedule to work with in 2019. They will play the Dallas Cowboys, the Washington Redskins, the Philadelphia Eagles, the Minnesota Vikings, the Green Bay Packers, the Arizona Cardinals, the Miami Dolphins, and the Buffalo Bills at home next season. They will play the Dallas Cowboys, the Washington Redskins, the Philadelphia Eagles, the Chicago Bears, the Detroit Lions, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the New England Patriots, and the New York Jets on the road.

Dallas, Philadelphia, Chicago, and New England were the only teams that made it to the playoffs in 2018. That could be good news for New York next season. They have a reasonable schedule and it could get them back into the playoffs.

What may not get them back into the playoffs next season is if they don't figure out the quarterback position and draft well in the offseason. Eli Manning has one more year left on his contract and he is unsure if he will be back for the New York Giants in 2019. If he is not, it is very possible they draft Dwyane Haskins out of Ohio State or Daniel Jones out of Duke.

New York is set in the backfield for years to come with Saquon Barkley. He will be the offensive rookie of the year most likely.

They should hang onto Odell Beckham Jr., Sterling Shepard, and Evan Engram. The Giants need another play maker on the outside.

The offensive line was better, but they need to draft some more. The defensive line needs a pass rusher. They need to trade Janoris Jenkins and Olivier Vernon for a few draft picks. The New York Giants currently have 9-11 picks, but they could wind up with more.

They should try to sign some free agents, but I am not sure if they will use the free agent market that much. New York needs help in the worst way at cornerback, but cornerback Sam Beal could be a big bonus for this team next season. He was taken in the supplemental draft in 2018 and the Giants will not have a third-round pick this season because of it.

It isn't out of the question that the New York Giants could go from worst to first next season because of their schedule, but they have a lot of questions to answer this offseason before we reach that point.
