Grizzlies Finally Willing to Trade Marc Gasol and Mike Conley

The Memphis Grizzlies are finally coming to terms that they won't win with Marc Gasol and Mike Conley as their centerfold. That is why the Grizzlies are ready to trade either or both of them before the trade deadline.

Injuries have been one of the main reasons why the Grizzlies are breaking the team apart. Their stars have been unhealthy and that has led to a lot of loses. The Grizzlies are bad and won't be making the playoffs. That is the best time to admit what you have isn't working.

Trading their star players will not be easy. Conley is owed over $66 million in the next two years and I can't see a team taking up that contract. That is a lot of money going against the cap space. When the Grizzlies gave Conley the richest contract in NBA history, many people expected it come back and haunt them and here we are.

Memphis has nobody to blame but themselves. Paying Conley $30 million a year didn't make sense. While Conley is a great player, he did not deserve that contract. Would another team have offered him that amount of money? Maybe but the Grizzlies should have let another team spend that much money on a player that isn't even in the top ten.

On the other end, there is Gasol. Age has caught up with Gasol and he hasn't looked like himself the past few years. And he isn't to be blamed. The pace of NBA games has increased every year and now it is the highest pace in the history of the NBA. That is not easy for a player as big as Gasol.

The pace of the NBA isn't the only thing to blame. While injuries have stymied Gasol, it doesn't paint the whole picture. In today's game, Gasol is becoming prehistoric. There are more athletic big men in the NBA that can play like guards and have long arms and are very athletic. They are nightmare match-ups for a player that doesn't move well who is in his mid-thirties.

The good news is that the Grizzlies have good young players they can build around. If they draft right and sign the right players in free agency, they can compete in the Western Conference in two seasons. It will be interesting to see if either Gasol or Conley are still on the team in two years.
