The New York Giants decided to keep four quarterbacks on the roster as of Saturday afternoon when they were making final cuts to the 53-man roster. There was no way that they were going to keep all four on the roster and one of them was going to be on the move sooner or later. The Giants decided to cut quarterback Davis Webb on Sunday afternoon.
He was a third-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Webb was drafted by general manager Jerry Reese and maybe that was one of the reasons why maybe the Giants released him. They have had a new general manager since the end of the regular season in David Gettleman. He drafted Kyle Lauletta in the fourth-round in the 2018 NFL Draft.
With Webb now off the roster, will Lauletta be Manning's successor?
The New York Giants basically have no choice to only hope he will be the future quarterback. With Manning being 37 years old, Lauletta is going to have to be ready to be the man within the next year or two. There is no way 30-year-old Alex Taney is the future. It was a surprise that he was kept on the roster over Webb.
Webb was going to be the backup quarterback on the roster this season and it seemed as if he was going to be the future starting quarterback. Head Coach Pat Shurmur like his progress over the offseason, but the front office had other ideas.
Kyle Lauletta is from the University of Richmond and he played in the best conference in the FCS in the CAA. During his senior year at Richmond, Lauletta completed 64.9 percent of his passes for 3,737 yards 28 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He rushed for 90 yards on 68 carries and four touchdowns. Kyle Lauletta also caught one pass for eight yards.
During the preseason with the New York Giants, he has completed 17-of-35 passes for 194 yards one touchdown and two interceptions. Lauletta also rushed for 13 yards on two carries and one touchdown.
The Giants first game of the season is in one week from Sunday afternoon at home against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Eli Manning will be the starter. It is unknown at this point of time who is the backup. Kyle Lauletta would make the most sense because Davis Webb has been cut.
It would be a shock to see Alex Taney as the backup. Lauletta is going to learn well from Manning during the meantime. If Eli Manning gets hurt during the season, Kyle Lauletta is going to have to be ready. What if the Giants start 0-4 or 0-5 and Manning is one of the reasons why? Do you think they would make a quarterback change and start him?
Time will only tell with this situation, but this is going to be a story line throughout the season for the New York Giants.
