NBA First Half Awards
With the season just over halfway done, let's look at the major awards. Feel free to disagree but it's James Hardens world right now and we're just living in it.
The Oakland Raiders and the San Francisco 49ers both had one win entering last night. The 49ers announced before the game that third string quarterback Nick Mullens would get the start instead of C.J. Beatherd because of an injury to him. Mullens was undrafted and he played at Southern Miss. This is his second year in the NFL.
Nick Mullens didn't look scared at all. Head Coach Kyle Shanahan did an excellent preparing him for this game. Because of it, Mullens completed 72.7 percent of his passes for 262 yards and three touchdowns. He led them to a 34-3 win.
Was his success because of how bad the Oakland Raiders are?
Part of his success was definitely enlarge to how bad the Raiders are. San Francisco would get the ball often and it allowed Mullens to get into a rhythm. Anytime I watched him last night, he put his passes on the money. There were a couple of dropped passes on him.
Anytime he faced a blitz, Nick Mullens did a good job of getting rid of the ball. The Oakland Raiders have one of the worst defenses in the NFL. They have no pass rush and their secondary is horrendous. Oakland is prone to giving up big plays and they gave up a few of them last night.
That's what happens when Khalil Mack isn't around anymore.
If I were Kyle Shanahan, I would play him again next week against the New York Giants on Monday Night Football. If he plays well again next week and I think he will, Mullens should remain the starting quarterback.
After the New York game, they will go on a bye week. After that, the remaining six games will be against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the road, the Seattle Seahawks on the road, the Denver Broncos at home, the Seattle Seahawks at home, the Chicago Bears at home, and the Los Angeles Rams on the road.
If Mullens impresses, will they keep him around as Jimmy Garoppolo's back up or will they trade him to a team that needs a quarterback and get multiple picks in return for him? Two teams that come to mind is the New York Giants and the Miami Dolphins. The reason why is because they both have offensive mind coaches.
