NBA Moves Before the Season Starts
The NBA season officially starts tomorrow and teams were getting last minute tasks done. See what went down hours before the NBA season kicked off.
When Kirk Cousins signed a three-year deal with the Vikings, the Jets missed their first option at quarterback. However, they had their eyes set on the Vikings back up quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. The 25-year old is expected to sign a one-year $15M deal. The Jets also re-signed 39 year-old quarterback Josh McCown to a one-year $10M deal. McCown was told he would go into training camp as the starter.
The Miami, Florida native played 30 games with the Minnesota Vikings in three seasons. He missed the entire 2016 season with a dislocated knee on a freak non-contact injury in training camp in August of 2016. He previously played 1 game in 2017 where he threw one interception in two attempts in a 34-7 blowout victory against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Case Keenum took the starting role for the Vikings last year in Week two and played well above his expectations with a QBR rating of 98.3. He threw 22 touchdowns, seven interceptions for 3,547 passing yards. He lead the Vikings to a 12-3 record and to the NFC Championship.
The only concern here for the Jets is Bridgewater's durability. There is no simple indication how Bridgewater's reconstructed knee will react to the speed of NFL game action going forward. Bridgewater has been sidelined for 14 months and spent six weeks on the physically unable to perform list (PUP). He was medically cleared to return to practice and served as Keenum's backup from Weeks 10-17.
Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan would have the luxury of drafting the best player available at No. 6 overall in the 2018 NFL Draft rather than forcing a quarterback selection. Once Bridgewater signs, it could put back up quarterbacks Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty out of a job.
Bridgewater, 25, still considers himself a starter which will make for an interesting competition during training camp. Bridgewater has thrown 28 touchdowns, 22 interceptions, 6,150 passing yards with three fumbles in his 30 game career in Minnesota. He is also a threat with his legs with 398 career rushing yards.
