Is Kyrie Irving Planning to Leave the Celtics?
The Boston Celtics are worried that Kyrie Irving will leave instead of resign with them. Should the Celtics be worried?
Kyrie Irving has made headlines for various reasons over the last few years. He demanded a trade from the Cleveland Cavaliers. He even said that the earth was flat. However, his most recent action was arguably the most peculiar. Irving called LeBron James to apologize.
Initially, Irving was critical of his teammates after their recent struggles. Last weekend, they lost to the Orlando Magic, a team they should never lose to. On Monday, they lost to the Brooklyn Nets. As a team that was expected to be a shoo-in for the NBA Finals, their performance has been underwhelming.
A few of the Boston Celtics players thought the criticism was necessary. “Kyrie said a lot of things after the last game that people didn’t’ want to hear. But it’s showing,” Terry Rozier said. On the flip side, Jaylen Brown thought Irving should tone it down a bit.
After the past two losses, Kyrie called LeBron James to apologize for how he acted in Cleveland. Wednesday, Kyrie went to the media after a 117-108 victory over the Toronto Raptors. He wanted to discuss what transpired during his phone call with LeBron.
Now Irving knows understands what it was like to be in LeBron’s shoes. He wanted to be the man and was hesitant to let James be the top dog. Fast forwarding to today, Kyrie is surrounded by several young players with can score the basketball.
Rozier, Brown, and Tatum all want the ball in their hands. It makes sense they wouldn’t want to take a lesser role. They took over the team when Irving and Gordon Hayward were injured. The Celtics were only one win away from going the Finals.
Since Hayward and Irving have returned, it has been a struggle for all the pieces to mesh together. This is a very young and talented team. After the phone call with LeBron, Kyrie knew he had adjust his approach a bit with the team.
Against Toronto, Irving had a career-high 18 assists. He made a clear point to get everyone involved in the game and then closed it out in the end. Needless to say, James was a little surprised to hear from his former teammate.
Who would have thought that Irving, a guy who demanded a trade because of the LeBron, calls him for guidance? He was clearly humbled by his experiences and now understands what James was trying to teach him in Cleveland. Kyrie must prove he has what it takes to lead Boston back to the top of the east.
