Lakers fail to avoid lottery, will lose a top 10 pick

After finishing the season with a 35-47 record the Lakers are headed back to the lottery. Unfortunately they will not get their top 10 pick this year. The Lakers will see themselves lose out on their lottery pick, no matter where it lands.

The Lakers lottery pick will be owned by current playoff teams Philadelphia 76ers or eternal rival Boston Celtics. If the Lakers pick falls between the fourth and tenth pick then the 76ers will get it, and if it becomes second or third pick then the Celtics get the pick. This leaves the Lakers with only the 25th pick they got in their trade from the Cavs.

At the beginning of the season the Lakers needed to make sure they avoided the lottery, knowing they would lose their pick to one of two teams. Yet at the end of the season they see themselves back in the lottery pick knowing they could have avoided this had they been able to defeat weaker teams and avoid the same problems from the past seasons. Even though the Lakers have had their best season since the 2012-13, but it will still cost them a chance at getting another young player for their squad.

The Lakers are in a no win situation with their draft pick as it is no longer draft protected. That means the pick, no matter were it falls, does not belong to the Lakers. As mentioned if the pick falls between 2-10 in the draft it goes to 76ers or Celtics, but what happens if it becomes the number one pick in the draft? In that situation the 76ers would get the top pick in the draft.

Laker fans should avoid watching the 2018 NBA draft as they will not be happy with any outcome. The organization's best chance to improve will be through free agency. If not free agents sign and without a draft pick, then the Lakers only other chance to improve is going to be based on what their young players do this offseason.

The future for the Lakers can go any way, but one thing is they should not be happy that they fell into the lottery again. Laker fans will be hoping that this pick is not the one that becomes the number one pick they have missed out on the last three years. Fans of the purple and gold should prepare themselves for the worse case scenario, they just gave the 76ers the number one pick or worse they just helped their rival get the second pick in the draft.
