Liverpool vs. Chelsea

This should be a fantastic Premier League game as two sides in great form come up against each other. These sides have been great in the Premier League recently with Liverpool in 5th place and Chelsea in 3rd. Liverpool have won their last 3 Premier League matches by 3 goals each and have maintained 2 clean sheets in that period. Chelsea have won their last 4 Premier League games and they won their last match 4-0 against West Brom! In a game that will be so close these teams need to capitalize on every edge they have over their opponents so the fact that Liverpool are home could make a big difference to the outcome of the match. Last season Liverpool had a good Premier League record against Chelsea with a win and a draw which suggests that Chelsea struggle against Liverpool.

Hazard’s great form is the main reason that Chelsea are so incredible at the moment. He’s been in quite possibly the greatest form of his life. He scored twice and got 1 assist against West Brom and got a goal and an assist in their Champions League game against Qarabag. If this form continues he could easily get 1 or 2 against this Liverpool side as well. The fact that he is able to get both goals and assists and he works well with Morata makes his form crucial to their side. Speaking of Morata, he should be important as well because he is currently Chelsea’s top goal scorer in the Premier League and he’s also been in good form lately. His link-up play with Hazard has helped him a lot and the fact that they play with two strikers makes the pair of them so dangerous up top.

Liverpool might come into this one as second-favorites but they have some really strong attacking players in the likes of Salah, Mane and Coutinho. After many injury problems the three of them were separated for most of this first bit of the season but since they’ve been back Liverpool have been incredible. Salah is the top scorer in the Premier League at the moment with 9 goals already. In his last 2 matches he’s got 4 goals meaning he’s on fire lately. While Salah has been the main goal-scoring threat for Liverpool, Coutinho and Mane have been more focused on setting up chances. After an injury which lasted 2 matches coutinho came back and got a goal and an assist. I think that if Liverpool stay offensive this game and these three perform well Liverpool could see the game go in their favour.

Both of these teams can be quite inconsistent defensively. Liverpool have a tendency to be leading a game but then lose it because their defence falters although in the last few games they’ve done well to maintain clean-sheets. Chelsea are a very strong defensive side but sometimes their defenders push forward too far and they can get caught out for that. Liverpool have conceded 17 this season while Chelsea have only conceded 10 which is less than they’ve played. Chelsea are definitely stronger at the back than Liverpool and when Liverpool do concede they tend to concede quite a bit. If Liverpool can learn to play better defensively after they’ve conceded we could see a side with a much better defensive record.

If Liverpool do come into this one with an attacking mindset and players like Salah and Mane perform at their best they will give Chelsea a real run for their money. Chelsea have looked better so far in the Premier League but Liverpool are really starting to plug their gaps and they’ve looked a lot better recently. I do think that the defensive side of Liverpool will let them down in this one just like it did against Tottenham. The question is will they be able to outscore Chelsea? I think that because Chelsea can play so well defensively Liverpool will lose this one 2-1.
