Is Kyrie Irving Planning to Leave the Celtics?
The Boston Celtics are worried that Kyrie Irving will leave instead of resign with them. Should the Celtics be worried?
While the Mets win streak came to an end Saturday night, Wilmer Flores delivered a walk off home run Sunday to give the Mets their twelfth win of the season.
The win was the Mets first walk off victory of the season and Flores third career walk off home run.
While the Mets offense was relatively quiet most of the day the pitching kept them in the game, especially the dominance of starter Noah Syndergaard. Thor went through a stretch of striking out eight consecutive Brewers hitters, and 11 total.
As impressive as the strikeout feat was, it elevated Syndergaard's pitch count which led to his departure after 5 and 1/3 innings even though he was nearly untouchable. It did take Syndergaard 101 pitches to get through those 5 and 1/3 innings so it wasn't like he was pulled with a low pitch count.
Outfielder Brandon Nimmo also had a very impressive day, going 3-5, scoring two of the Mets three runs. Nimmo singled and scored a run in the first inning to get the Mets on the board. Then, after Robert Gsellman surrendered the lead coming in relief of Syndergaard, Nimmo hit his first home run of the season to tie the game at two.
It's been an interesting start to the season for Nimmo. The 2011 first round draft pick got the start in center field on opening day but was sent down to AAA for a few days. Nimmo was playing well but the way matchups were playing out in the series in Miami he was sent down simply in a move to manipulate the roster.
Nimmo hasn't let the moves affect him, he still comes to the park every day with that trademarked smile on his face.
As far as Manager Mickey Callaway is concerned the Mets have the best outfield in baseball, so finding at bats for fourth and fifth outfielders Nimmo and Juan Lagares will be tough to come by but Callaway is determined to make it work. Nimmo is willing to do whatever it takes to help the Mets win a championship.
“I want to be part of a World Series team,” Nimmo said post game. “And if that means I need to come off the bench and put up a good at-bat for a pinch hit or whatever, it may be then that’s what I’m going to do.”
New York continues their home stand when the rival Nationals come to Citi Field for the first time this season. Some will say the Mets are lucky that they don't have to face Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg but you deal with the cards you're dealt.
Trying not to get ahead of ourselves, if the Mets manage to sweep the Nationals again they'll have a nine-game lead in the National League East. While it's still very early in the season, a nine-game lead is a nice cushion a top the division.
