Possible Rookie of the Year Candidates Right Now

There are not many star rookies that will be playing on Christmas Day. Most of them will have the day off to relax. Who are the top rookies in the league so far and who could win rookie of the year in the NBA?

The favorite to win the rookie of the year right now is Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks. He has broke out at the age of 19 and not many people thought Doncic was going to break out this quickly. He is averaging 19 PPG, 6.6 RPG, 4.9 APG, 0.3 BPG, and 1.1 SPG so far this season. Luka Doncic is making players around him better and he is also making shots. If Dallas makes the playoffs, he will win this award by a land slide. The Mavericks also acquired him on draft day and the Atlanta Hawks are regretting it right now. He was the third overall pick.

The second favorite to win rookie of the year right now is DeAndre Ayton of the Phoenix Suns. He is a double-double machine and Ayton is playing really well on the worst team in the NBA. He is averaging 16.6 PPG, 10.9 RPG, and 0.9 BPG so far this season. DeAndre Ayton was the number one overall pick in the NBA Draft and he is only 20 years old.

The third favorite to win rookie of the year right now is Trae Young of the Atlanta Hawks. Young was the fifth overall pick in the NBA Draft. He is 20 years old and was acquired in a trade with the Dallas Mavericks on draft night. My biggest knock on him in college was that he doesn't pass the ball enough. Trae Young is averaging 7.8 APG so far this season. He is also averaging 15.4 PPG, 2.8 RPG, and 0.8 SPG. Young is doing a better job this season of making teammates better. He will be good in the near future and Trae Young is a cornerstone piece for this franchise.

The fourth favorite to win rookie of the year right is Marvin Bagley of the Sacramento Kings. He was the second overall pick in the NBA Draft. There was a lot of questions about his ability to play defense at the next level. Bagley is only 19 years old. He is one of the reasons why the Kings are over .500. Sacramento is currently in one of the eight playoff spots in the Western Conference. Marvin Bagley is averaging 12.7 PPG, 6.1 RPG, and 1 BPG so far this season.

The fifth favorite to win rookie of the year right now is Jaren Jackson Jr. of the Memphis Grizzles. He was very raw coming out of Michigan State. I couldn't understand why he was being drafted number four overall last summer, but the Grizzles see a lot of upside in him. If Jackson Jr. is playing like this this season, he is going to be a stud for years to come. Memphis is playing a lot better this season and they are currently in the playoff hunt. He is a very versatile player. Jaren Jackson Jr. is averaging 13.2 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 1.3 APG, 1.8 BPG, and 0.9 APG so far this season.

The sixth favorite to win rookie of the year right now is Wendell Carter Jr. of the Chicago Bulls. Chicago isn't a good team this season, but Carter Jr. will be one of the cornerstone pieces for this team in the near future. He was the seventh pick in the NBA Draft. Wendell Carter Jr. is only 19 years old. He is averaging 10.3 PPG, 6.7 RPG, 1.9 APG, and 1.4 BPG so far this season.

Other rookies to keep an eye on as the season moves on: (SF) Kevin Knox of the New York Knicks, (PG) Collin Sexton of the Cleveland Cavaliers, © Mohamed Bamba of the Orlando Magic, and (PG) Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Los Angeles Clippers.
