Where Will Carmelo Anthony and Kawhi Leonard End Up This Summer?
The question everyone is asking is where will Carmelo Anthony and Kawhi Leonard end up this summer?
I thought Boston was dead in the water when Kyrie went down, yet here we are with the Celtics holding a 2-0 lead over the 76ers. Part of the lead is due to Brad Stevens and part is due to his scrappy roster and the emergence of Terry Rozier.
Terry Rozier seized the moment to shine when Kyrie was ruled out and so far in these playoffs he's done that and more. His playoff averages so far have been 19.1 points, 6.9 assists, 4.3 rebounds, and he's shooting as near as makes no difference 44% from deep. Rozier was the series hero in the first round vs the Bucks and also had his first taste of real playoff beef. So far in the Semi Finals he's continued his hot hand and put in a clutch Game 2 performance. The post season has been a coming out party for “Scary Terry” and that's a reason for opponents and even Celtic fans to worry about.
The crazy thing is that these Celtics aren't even healthy. When next season comes around they'll have Gordon Hayward and Kyrie Irving back. A fully healthy Celtics squad that's oozing with talent will cause havoc in the East next year. The problems though start there and then. Terry Rozier has proven he's a starting quality point guard in this league, the issue is that Kyrie Irving is also a Celtic. Rozier also certainly won't start in front of Jaylen Brown at the two guard so that relegates him to a bench role again. I highly doubt Terry Rozier wants to spend a contract year relegated to a Sixth Man role, which he is clearly better than.
Boston has been brilliant in acquiring young and cheap talent, the problem though is coming faster than Celtic fans may want to imagine. Marcus Smart's going to a be a free agent this year, Rozier and Marcus Morris will be one after 2018-2019, then in 2019-2020 there's Kyrie's player option and Jaylen Brown's pending payday. There is no chance Boston can afford them all and in all honesty, expect Terry Rozier to be the first odd man out. Marcus Smart trade rumors were circulating all year this year and expect that to happen to Rozier. The NBA knows Danny Ainge is ruthless and he's smart enough to know that he'll have to cash in his trade chips eventually.
Celtics fans should enjoy and embrace their playoff run this year; it's been a surprise to say the least and have given Terry Rozier the spotlight to shine. Every minute he's on the court, they should cheer for him because chances are next season will be the last year he's wearing Celtics green. Go get your money Terry, you've earned it.
