Joel Embiid Should be Considered an MVP Candidate
It is only January and a lot of people are talking about either James Harden or Giannis Antetokounmpo to win the MVP, but what about Joel Embiid?
The New York Knicks haven't been great this year (what a surprise) but they have had a few bright spots. One of them has been Enes Kanter. He has played well for them and may be rewarded by being traded.
Kanter has been moved to the bench and has become part of the second unit. He isn't happy with that move and has complained about it. In Kanter's defense, he has played well this season. However, the Knicks want to give his minutes to younger players.
Also, Kanter's defense is bad. Like really bad. He may be the worst pick and roll player in the NBA. The Knicks are bad defensively and Kanter is one of the reasons. He is not a shot blocking big man but it is worse than that. He just doesn't play the right defense. He doesn't intimidate opposing players and leaves certain areas unguarded.
If another team wants a dominant center, Kanter is their man. He is averaging 14.4 points per game and 10.7 rebounds per game. That may be worth a lot to some teams in the league. Kanter is dominant under the rim but only on the offensive end.
The thing that may make or break a trade is Kanter's contract. He is making $18.6 million this year but it is the last year of his contract. That may lead to teams waiting until the trade deadline is closer until teams make a play for him. They don't want his contact to go against their salary cap so they will wait.
I think Kanter will be traded. He is skilled on the offensive end and is a great rebounder. Teams want a player like him once the playoff picture is clearer. It will be interesting to see what the Knicks get in return for him.
