Will Kevin Durant Leave the Warriors?
The Golden State Warriors' Kevin Durant will be a free agent next summer. Will he stay or will he leave the Warriors?
The New York Knicks did the most non Knicks thing in the world and hired a coach who, as far as I'm concerned, is a good one. Knick fans should really be breathing a sigh of relief as this hiring may be helping point this franchise in a much better post Jackson direction; on the flip side there may be some concerns with Fizdale that are just hidden under his data hating skin. With a new coach at the helm, the Knicks just need to be patient.
David Fizdale is liked and supported by two of the biggest names in the NBA today, Lebron James and Dwyane Wade. Those connections should say a lot, especially from Lebron James who is probably the largest diva when it comes to who is coaching his team. It should be a huge surprise then that Fizdale and Grizzlies franchise player Marc Gasol never saw eye to eye on, well anything. The relationship between star player and head coach got so bad that the organization had to choose between one or the other. While the Gasol drama may be just one small blemish on what is a very player friendly coaches record, it should still warrant raising an eyebrow for Knick fans.
Despite having coached in the the city famous for “Grit and Grind”, David Fizdale helped implement a modern NBA offense during his tenure there. Under Fiz, Memphis jumped up from 27th in three point frequency up to 14th while also chopping the questionable mid range frequency from 9th to 17th. It will be interesting to see how this roster adapts from Hornacek's triangle offense to a hybrid of heavy spacing with a more traditional post up offense. The worst case scenario is the Knicks become inefficient three point chuckers all season seeing how their roster isn't ideal for a high percentage 3 point team.
There's a very high chance of Kristaps missing the entire 2018-2019 season due to his ACL tear. On top of the probability of missing their star player, the Knicks are nearly at the cap already and free agency hasn't even begun yet. Fizdale is going to have a very empty roster with the best player probably being Tim Hardaway Jr and the worst being the remains of Joakim Noah. I expect the Knicks to fully tank this coming season and when I say “tank”, I mean to levels the NBA may not have seen since Sam Hinkie. The ideal situation isn't until the 2018-2019 offseason when Kristaps is fully healthy, there is plenty of cap space, and the 2019 draft is in clearer view. Hopefully Knick fans can stomach another season of losing in hopes for a much brighter future, then again this is New York and they've endured enough losing.
