QB Vic Viramontes to transfer from University of Minnesota

After a 5-7 record in his first season at Minnesota, P.J. Fleck has a problem at quarterback this year. Some of that was set aside by the commitment of Vic Viramontes, the No. 1 JUCO dual threat quarterback in the 2018 class out of Riverside (Cal.) Community College.

But Viramontes struggled in the Gophers' spring game, with more fumbles (two; one lost) than pass completions, as he dropped to No. 3 on the depth chart by all accounts. So with all of that, Andy Greder of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported Saturday morning that Viramontes will transfer back to Riverside C.C., try to switch to linebacker and then seek another major college offer closer to home in California.

Viramontes originally committed to Michigan out of high school in Norco, California. Then he switched to California, redshirted and did not play amid a coaching chance before transferring to Riverside for last season.

As for the Gophers, redshirt freshman Tanner Morgan and true freshman Zack Annexstad are clearly the top two on the quarterback depth chart now. Seth Green was also a casualty of Annexstad's rise during spring practice, as he was moved to tight end in April.

All things considered, Viramontes may have done Fleck a big favor by bailing on the Gophers so quickly. He seems to have been incredibly overmatched during spring practice, so Big Ten competition surely would have crushed his confidence if he had somehow won the starting job during fall practice.
