Is Kyrie Irving Planning to Leave the Celtics?
The Boston Celtics are worried that Kyrie Irving will leave instead of resign with them. Should the Celtics be worried?
The preseason is all about getting reps and getting in game shape for the upcoming seasons. Wins and losses usually don't affect the mindset of a team during the preseason. A full load of preseason games kicked off on Thursday Night, including the Cleveland Browns vs New York Giants at Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Second overall pick Saquon Barkley ran for 39 yards on his first carry of the preseason and this is what everyone is hoping for from him this upcoming season. He rushed for 43 yards on four carries. The Giants first team offense played the first two series and that was it. Wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. did not play. The Giants lost the game 20-10, but what else did we learn about them?
Even at 37 years old, Eli Manning looked good throwing the football. He completed four-out-of-seven passes for 26 yards. The backup quarterback battle got more interesting last night as well. Davis Webb did not look great at all and he is currently the number two quarterback on the depth chart. Webb completed nine passes in 22 attempts for 70 yards. He also had one carry for six yards. Rookie Kyle Lauletta looked good throwing the football. He throws a good spiral and Lauletta will improve with practice. He completed six passes in nine attempts for 48 yards.
Running back Jalen Simmons is competing for a roster spot and he ran hard all game long. Simmons rushed for 38 yards on seven carries and a scored a touchdown in the third-quarter after the Giants recovered a muffed punt.
Jonathan Stewart didn't look effective running the ball as he only had three yards on three carries and Stewart also had one reception for eight yards. The Giants should not forget about running back Wayne Gallman. He only had five rushing yards on three carries, but Gallman caught four passes for 33 yards.
Marquis Bundy (two receptions for 46 yards), Roger Lewis (two receptions for 25 yards), Russell Shepard (two receptions for 24 yards), and Hunter Sharp (two receptions for 16 yards) are all competing for the third receiver spot on the roster.
The first team offensive line looked pretty good for the most part. There weren't to many mistakes and they played a no huddle offense.
The New York Giants 3-4 defense has a lot of potential if it is executed correctly. Outside linebacker Kareem Martin played for defensive coordinator James Betcher with the Arizona Cardinals. Martin loves his scheme and so does a lot of players on the New York Giants defense.
They were burned a couple of times on blitzes. The first time they were burned was when Tyrod Taylor threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to tight end David Njoku in the first-quarter and it left linebacker Alec Ogletree in one-on-one coverage.
The second time they were burned was when Baker Mayfield threw a slant route to Antonio Callaway and he took it for a 54-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
The New York Giants did a very good job stopping the run but they need to work on pass coverage. Safety Landon Collins can be the most dangerous player in this new defensive scheme.
Aldrick Rosas made a 42-yard field goal in the first-quarter on the game's first drive. The New York Giants will practice with the Detroit Lions next week and that is what the preseason match up will be next Friday Night at Ford Field in Detroit.
