Joel Embiid Should be Considered an MVP Candidate
It is only January and a lot of people are talking about either James Harden or Giannis Antetokounmpo to win the MVP, but what about Joel Embiid?
The Carolina Hurricanes have not made it to the playoffs since the 2008-2009 season. They have not win a Stanley Cup title since 2005-2006. Speaking of 2005-2006, Rod Brind'Amour was a part of that team and he is now the Carolina Hurricanes coach. Carolina let go of Bill Peters this past offseason and it wasn't working with him.
Brind'Amour brings a different philosophy to the table. The front office did make a couple of changes this offseason like trading away defenseman Noah Hanifin and signing goalie Petr Mrazek.
The Carolina Hurricanes entered Thursday night first place in the Metropolitan Division with a 5-3-1 record with 11 points. They have scored 29 goals and have given up 26 goals. Justin Williams is the new captain for Carolina this season and Jordan Staal was the captain last season. Will the Hurricanes be able to keep this up?
The Carolina Hurricanes will need to keep playing at a high level. The Metropolitan Division is the toughest division in the entire NHL. They have to worry about teams like the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Washington Capitals, the New Jersey Devils, the Columbus Blue Jackets, and the Philadelphia Flyers.
Carolina is a very young team and they have been drafting well. Sebastian Aho leads the Carolina Hurricanes with 14 points so far this season (4 goals and 10 assists). His plus/minus is 14. Michael Ferland has six goals and three assists. His plus/minus is seven.
Justin Williams and Teuvo Teravainen each have one goal and seven assists so far this season. Williams has a plus/minus of 3 and Teravainen has a plus/minus of 7.
Second overall pick Andrei Svechnikov has scored two goals and recorded two assists. His plus/minus is -1. Warren Foegele can be an x-factor for Carolina as the season goes on. He has scored three goals and has recorded two assists. His plus/minus is -1.
The defenseman have been good. Jacoob Slavin and Justin Faulk each have recorded four assists, but Faulk has scored a goal. Slavin's plus/minus is -1 and Faulk's plus/minus is 3.
Petr Mrazek's record is 2-2-1 with a .888 save percentage and a 2.64 GAA. Curtis McElhinney's record is 3-1 with a .892 save percentage and a 2.76 GAA. Scott Darling has been with the Charlotte Checkers (AHL) so far this season, but he was recently called up from a conditioning stint.
This could be Carolina's weakness. Keep an eye on for the name Alex Nedeljkovic. He is 22 years old and is currently playing for the Charlotte Checkers in the AHL. Nedekjkovic has a 5-1 record with a .917 save percentage and a 2.17 GAA.
The Carolina Hurricanes next game is against the San Jose Sharks at home on Friday night. The Hurricanes are overdue to get back to the playoffs.
