Winter Meetings Under Way in Baseball, What Could the Mets do?

With another day of the baseball winters meetings over, the New York Mets are looking to stay active after trading for second baseman Robinson Cano and closer Edwin Diaz from the Seattle Mariners last week. General Manager Brodie Van Waganen is looking to stay aggressive and change the mind set of this baseball team.

There have been talks about the Mets trying to acquire catcher J.T. Realmuto, but the Miami Marlins are asking a lot in return. Miami wants either Michael Conforto, Amed Rosario, or Brandon Nimmo in return. Van Waganen made a strong statement about the fact that he doesn't want to fill one hole by creating another one.

The New York Mets would be better off by signing Wilson Ramos or Yasmani Grandal. They still need another outfielder. New York is interested in signing A.J. Pollock and Bryce Harper. If they could land one of those two players, it would be a huge boost for this team.

Pollock isn't the kind of player Harper is, but A.J. Pollock is a valuable piece to a team. He hits for contact and drives in runs. Pollock is also a good fielder.

They could also try and sign other outfielders like Marwin Gonzales, Derek Dietrich, Adam Jones, or Carlos Gonzales.

The bullpen needs to be addressed. They need to go after players like Andrew Miller and Adam Ottavino. Miller would be a solid eight-inning guy to have and Ottavino would be a solid seventh-inning guy to have.

Even though the New York Mets have a solid starting rotation, it is really important to have a strong bullpen because analytics is being used often in today's game.

The Boston Red Sox, the New York Yankees, and the Milwaukee Brewers all had very strong bullpens last season.

New York doesn't need a first baseman because it most likely be Peter Alonso next season. They should try and find a reliable everyday third baseman if they can. Todd Frazier is not an everyday third baseman and the Mets decided not to bring back Wilmer Flores.

Even though Manny Machado is an option, they most likely will not pursue him. I told people last offseason the New York Mets should have signed Mike Moustakas. Moustakas is a free agent again this offseason and they should actually sign him this team. He would be a veteran they desperately need in the club house and Mike Moustakas also won a World Series Championship with the Kansas City Royals in 2015.

The winter meetings will continue for the next couple of days and they will end on Thursday December 13.
