Tottenham Hotspur is dialing up the heat in the transfer market, and the club’s front office is working in overdrive to restructure the midfield. At the center of the frenzy is Crystal Palace talisman Eberechi Eze. The England international has already shaken hands on personal terms with Spurs, who are looking to finalize a package hovering around the £60 million mark. Eze hasn’t been shy about the situation, outright telling a few of his England teammates that he fully expects the move to North London to get pushed across the line.
That said, the deal isn’t quite over the finish line. Crystal Palace is digging their heels in, holding out for a fee north of £60 million. There’s even a lingering chance the 27-year-old will lace up for the Eagles against Chelsea this Sunday if the paperwork isn’t sorted in time. For Tottenham, landing Eze is an isolated mission to secure a premier No. 10, completely independent of their ongoing pursuit of Manchester City winger Savinho. The pitch to Eze was straightforward and clearly hit home: he wants Champions League soccer, and he ideally wants to keep his roots in London.
Plugging the Maddison Gap
The urgency to bring in a top-tier playmaker is born out of pure necessity. After losing James Maddison for the bulk of the season to a devastating ACL injury, Spurs were forced to pivot aggressively. Their first swing was at Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White. Tottenham actually triggered the player’s release clause, only to watch Forest successfully block the maneuver and eventually convince Gibbs-White to pen a new contract.
With the front office now locked in on Eze, the brass is keeping their cards close to the chest. Speaking in the aftermath of a 3-0 rout over Burnley in the season opener, Tottenham boss Thomas Frank gave a distinctly guarded update on the club’s incoming business.
“We are in the market,” Frank noted. “Daniel (Levy), Johan (Lange) and Vinai (Venkatesham) are working very hard. If we can, we’d like to improve the squad. But we only want players we think that can improve us.”
Arsenal had previously been kicking the tires on Eze as well, but the Gunners ultimately bowed out. The Emirates front office hesitated to crowd their depth chart, opting instead to clear the runway for Ethan Nwaneri to get valuable minutes centrally this season. Across town at Selhurst Park, losing Eze is going to leave a massive void. Palace executives had drawn a line in the sand at the start of the summer, deciding they absolutely had to keep at least one of Eze or Marc Guehi. With Eze seemingly out the door, it looks certain that Guehi will be the one remaining to anchor the backline in South London.
A Seal of Approval
Crystal Palace legend and vocal Spurs supporter Darren Ambrose is entirely here for the move. Speaking on talkSPORT’s Inside Spurs, he didn’t hold back his excitement about how the transfer could elevate the player’s career.
“I want Eze as a Spurs player, I really do. I don’t want him as an Arsenal player, none of us do,” Ambrose said. “And if there’s anywhere I would like him to leave Palace, if he ever was to leave, it would only be to Spurs. He clearly has ambition, he clearly wants to play Champions League football.”
Ambrose also pointed out the harsh reality of Eze’s international prospects if he stays put. “He is a Champions League-quality player. For me, he should be starting for England. The affiliation I have for Palace is second to none, I love the club. But is he going to be starting for England at the end of this season with a season at Palace in the Conference League and finishing 10th, 12th? I don’t think he will.”
According to Ambrose, a high-profile move is the missing piece for Eze to lock down a starting job for the Three Lions. If he can drive Tottenham up the Premier League table and show out in the Champions League, the national team conversation shifts completely.
The Tonali Megabid
The spending spree might not stop in the attacking third. Arsenal and Tottenham are apparently gearing up for another heavyweight clash, this time circling Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali. While the Italian midfielder is locked into a contract at St. James’ Park through 2028, Newcastle is willing to listen if the price is right.
A fierce bidding war is already taking shape. According to reports out of Europe, Spurs—armed with their new manager Roberto de Zerbi—currently hold the winning hand in the negotiations. Newcastle has slapped a massive €100 million price tag on the Italian international, and the word on the street is that the bidding could realistically hit that staggering valuation as talks progress. A blockbuster transfer is now being viewed as a very real possibility in the near future, signaling that Tottenham is fully committed to a massive, sweeping roster overhaul.
