Arsenal’s Season Hangs in the Balance After Havertz Injury Blow

Arsenal’s ambitions for the Premier League and Champions League have taken a massive hit with the news that Kai Havertz is out for the remainder of the season. The German international, who has been a central figure in Mikel Arteta’s tactical setup, tore his hamstring during the club’s warm-weather training camp in Dubai. After undergoing further evaluations upon the team’s return to the UK, the club confirmed that surgery is inevitable, effectively sidelining him until the start of the next campaign.

The loss of Havertz is a bitter pill to swallow for a side already stretched thin. Having missed only two of Arsenal’s 36 matches this term, his durability was a massive asset. Beyond just his nine Premier League goals, his work rate was immense; he clocked 123 kilometers of distance covered between August and November alone, tying for the most in the league over that stretch. Losing that engine room capacity is a nightmare for Arteta, who is already navigating a depleted attacking unit.

With Gabriel Jesus out long-term following an ACL injury, the squad is suddenly devoid of a fit, recognized striker. The timing is particularly brutal given that Gabriel Martinelli—who picked up a hamstring issue in the Carabao Cup semi-final—isn’t expected back until at least March, and Bukayo Saka is still fighting his way back from his own hamstring surgery last December. While Saka was spotted putting in work during the Dubai trip, signaling a potential return as the season hits the home stretch, the overall lack of depth is glaring.

This injury crisis has put a massive spotlight on the club’s inactivity during the January window. Despite clear links to targets like RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko and Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins, the front office stood pat. Arteta has been relatively open about his disappointment regarding that lack of reinforcements, and the club is now left staring down the barrel of a decision that looks more like a regret by the day.

Meanwhile, the squad could see some shifting parts in the goalkeeping department. Illan Meslier has officially entered the free-agent market following his departure from Leeds United, and rumors are already swirling about a potential move to the Emirates. With David Raya firmly holding down the No. 1 spot, Arsenal is reportedly scouting for cover, especially with ongoing uncertainty regarding Kepa Arrizabalaga’s future.

Meslier’s trajectory has been a strange one—once tipped as a premier young talent during the Bielsa era, he saw his stock plummet after falling out of favor under Daniel Farke and spending the 2025/26 season as a third-string option. A move to North London might offer him a fresh start, even if it’s just to provide competition for the backup role currently held by Kepa, who managed a dozen starts across domestic cup competitions last year. Whether this potential signing provides the depth needed for a title charge remains to be seen, but as it stands, Arsenal is walking a tightrope.
