Borussia Dortmund’s debut at the FIFA Club World Cup may have fallen short of expectations, but the club is still walking away with a substantial payout.
In their first match of the tournament, BVB delivered a lackluster performance, ending in a 0–0 draw against Brazilian side Fluminense. While far from a memorable showing, the result still secured Dortmund a solid financial reward.
This is due to FIFA’s bonus structure in the group stage, which already distributes performance-based payouts. Teams receive $2 million for a win — as seen with Bayern Munich’s 10–0 blowout victory over Auckland — and $1 million for a draw. As a result, Dortmund’s goalless tie has earned the club approximately €870,000.
FIFA will distribute a total of $1 billion (about €926 million) among the 32 participating teams. Of that amount, $475 million is allocated based on sporting performance throughout the tournament.
If Dortmund and Bayern Munich advance to the round of 16, each club will receive an additional $7.5 million. Reaching the quarterfinals would add another $13.125 million, while a semifinal berth would bring in an extra $21 million. Finalists are guaranteed another $30 million, and the tournament champion will walk away with the trophy and a bonus of $40 million.
Despite the rocky start, BVB still has plenty of motivation to push forward — both for glory and for the sizable financial incentives ahead.
