Final Tune-Up at Wembley
The English national team is officially gearing up for its last home appearance before heading to the World Cup. Manager Thomas Tuchel has locked in his starting eleven for Tuesday’s highly anticipated friendly against Japan at Wembley Stadium. Coming off a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Uruguay earlier in the international window, the Three Lions are eager to find their rhythm. Tuchel is clearly using this final matchup on home soil to finalize his tactical approach and build momentum for the sport’s biggest stage.
A Quiet Exit from Hillsborough
While the current national squad looks toward the future, a former England winger is actively searching for his next opportunity. Nathan Redmond is officially a free agent following a brief and frustrating stint with Sheffield Wednesday. He originally arrived at Hillsborough boasting serious top-flight credentials, bringing the experience of 276 Premier League appearances to the club. Unfortunately, things just never clicked.
An early injury severely derailed his momentum right out of the gate. As a result, the 31-year-old managed to see the field for a mere 132 minutes spread across seven matches in all competitions. He never once cracked the starting lineup. Wednesday manager Henrik Pedersen noted earlier this month that Redmond’s contract was set to expire on January 26. Just days after that deadline passed, the manager publicly confirmed the departure and the resulting open spot on his roster.
Pedersen shed light on the decision, explaining that it followed a candid discussion with the veteran player. The two talked over his playing time, and the manager admitted he simply couldn’t make any promises regarding future minutes on the pitch.
Looking Back at a Proven Track Record
It is a noticeable dip for a player who previously made significant waves in English football. Redmond developed his skills in the Birmingham City academy, eventually making 82 senior appearances for the club starting in 2010. A move to Norwich followed three years later. There, he played a pivotal role in the club’s successful push for Premier League promotion during the 2014-15 campaign.
That standout performance caught the eye of Southampton, triggering a reported £10 million transfer in 2016. He settled in on the south coast for six years, putting up reliable numbers with 30 goals and 27 assists. During that stretch, he helped drive the Saints to the 2016-17 EFL Cup final, which ultimately ended in a tight 3-2 loss to Manchester United.
It was also during his prime at Southampton that Redmond earned his singular cap for the national team. He subbed in to replace Adam Lallana during a 2017 friendly defeat against Germany.
After leaving the Saints in 2022, Redmond tested the waters abroad with a season at Turkish powerhouse Besiktas. He eventually brought his talents back to England to join Burnley. Even while battling injuries there, his veteran presence helped secure their promotion to the Premier League just last year. Now, the experienced winger finds himself waiting for the next chapter of his career to unfold.
