About Every Sport

Every Sport is an independent encyclopedia of sports and their disciplines: how each one is classified, where it was born, who governs it, what you need to play it and where it has been contested.

The catalogue follows the family tree of sport — from umbrella sports such as athletics, aquatics or skiing down to individual disciplines and variants — and adds the facts that are recorded for each: country and century of origin, number of players, match length, equipment and playing area, the international federation in charge and its member associations.

Programme pages show which sports were contested at every Summer and Winter Olympic Games, the Paralympics, the World Games, the Commonwealth, Asian and Pan American Games and two dozen other multi-sport events, and how many medal events each sport had.

All facts come from Wikidata, the free knowledge base (CC0). Photos, pictograms, flags and federation logos are files from Wikimedia Commons, shown with their authors and licences. We publish no news, scores or betting information. Coverage follows what is recorded in the open data, so smaller and traditional sports may have fewer facts; corrections are welcome.
